Le 1er novembre 2003, la Maison royale espagnole a annoncé que l'infant Felipe, prince des Asturies, s'était fiancé à Letizia Ortiz Rocasolano. Felipe (né en 1968) est le fils unique du roi Juan Carlos d'Espagne (né en 1938) et de la reine Sofía (née en 1938 ; née en Grèce). Letizia (née en 1972) est la fille aînée de Jesús José Ortiz Álvarez et de sa première épouse María de la Paloma Rocasolano Rodríguez. L'annonce a été accueillie avec consternation par certains cercles en raison du fait que Letizia était divorcée, après avoir été mariée civilement de 1998 à 1999 à Alonso Guerrero Pérez (né en 1962).

The wedding of Felipe and Letizia was held on 22 May 2004 in Almudena Cathedral at the Royal Palace of Madrid. Felipe was at that time the heir to the Spanish throne. Letizia had worked as a journalist. The Roman Catholic wedding was presided over by the Archbishop of Madrid, Antonio María Rouco Varela. It was considered a state wedding, the first in Spain for more than fifty years, and it was also the first wedding to be held in the cathedral of Madrid, which had been consecrated in 1993.
